Nipomo Company offers to take rubble for free

By Randi Block/Staff Writer

Got a bunch of clean concrete and asphalt rubble you don't know what to do with? A Nipomo company is ready to take it off your hands.

RoXsand has begun offering part of its site as a free drop-off for companies or individuals that have excess concrete and asphalt rubble - saving people the trouble of paying to drop off the material at a landfill.

RoXsand is able to recycle the concrete and rubble into recycled base rock materials, which provides economic and environmental benefits, said Bruce Brassfield, RoXsand president. Agencies such as Caltrans have used RoXsand's recycled materials on local construction projects, he added.

This service also help agencies meet the California Integrated Waste Management Act's mandate that 50 percent of refuse needs to be recycled.

Since 2001, Santa Maria has been under contract with Union Asphalt to operate an asphalt recycling program at the city's landfill on East Main Street. The Santa Maria-based construction company recycles it and sells the resulting product as construction materials.

RoXsand will now be offering the same service for free for all material that's clean, which means it can't have any trash or dirt mixed in.

Advance reservations are not necessary for those interested in dropping off material as long as they come during regular business hours, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Additional hours may also eventually be available on Saturdays with reservations, Brassfield said.

RoXsand is at 2280 Hutton Road near the intersection of Highways 101 and 166, and people interested in dropping off concrete or rubble can just drive onto the property, where the material will be weighed before its dumped.
